Dates: 5 – 7th July 2011
All the events are free and all welcome

A colloquium on current practices of sound work which incorporate field recording as part of the process and the sonic material of the medium. Our aspiration is to foster a forum for artists to openly share and explore their practice and to develop the discourse and theorization germane to this expansive interdisciplinary field.

Themes include:

• rationale (including dogma and personal agendas)
• methods (be that tacit, decisive or strategic)
• fieldcraft insights, anecdotes and best practice
• conceptual frustrations
• ethical dilemmas
• technological fetishes
• virtues and shortcomings of the medium
• alignment with lineages, traditions and precursors (acoustic ecology, architectural practice, documentary, education, ethnography, experimental music, fine art, fluxus, natural history recording, sound design…)
• other issues that come to bear on the making and articulation of practice

Phonography Colloquium follows on from SPR’s Art and Soundscapes series in 2009 which hosted presentations by Peter Cusack, Barry Truax and Hildegard Westerkamp.
